PSMA Australia Pty Ltd is the dataset Custodian for Australia Post |
| ====================== |
Abstract and Purpose for the dataset |
| Abstract |
A postcode may be classed either as an area or a point-type postcode (eg. Post office box). |
|
A postcode may have many polygons defining its boundary. Postcode boundaries are based on the locality boundaries - see the lineage statement. |
|
A point-type postcode will have 1 active centroid defining its location. Postcodes of 'Post office box' type cannot have polygons. |
|
Ideally, a postcode must be related to at least 1 Locality, but this is not possible in all cases (eg. Northern Territory) so cannot be enforced as a hard-and-fast rule in the database. |
| -------------------------------------- |
| Purpose |
Post Code Boundaries is a seamless national database of Australia's postcode boundaries and centroids. It is designed to meet the needs of organisations that require a graphical representation of Post Code boundaries on a broad scale, to integrate with other data in servicing their business needs. |

Lineage and History Statement |
| Lineage |
Australia Post uses PSMA Australia′s Localities data to define Postcode boundaries. One to several Localities may be aggregated into a single postcode area and then allocated a postcode by Australia Post. Data maintenance is carried out by Australia Post and is then supplied to PSMA Australia.
Quality Assurance processes within LYNX® are used to check structural integrity of the data. LYNX is a cutting-edge data platform that has been developed to hold, quality assure and distribute PSMA Australia′s suite of national spatial datasets. It streamlines PSMA Australia′s data delivery. The LYNX environment provides the data release as downloads or on DVD.
Positional accuracy is dependant on the accuracy of data from the individual contributor data and this may vary considerably between and within jurisdiction boundaries. |
